Open data

The reference repository is the open tier: methodology, ratings, rationales, glossary, source register and matrix. Each signed release is also published here as a dated download, exactly as the platform verified it.

Licence of the data: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)

The charts and the glossary are also available as files for teaching: teaching pack.

Check a release

Each release comes with a SHA-256 checksum file and a minisign signature made with the release key shown below.

  1. Download the bundle, its signature and the checksum file:
    https://whatthechain.org/open-data/method-v1.2.0/bundle.json
    https://whatthechain.org/open-data/method-v1.2.0/bundle.json.minisig
    https://whatthechain.org/open-data/method-v1.2.0/SHA256SUMS.txt
  2. Compare the checksum (the value the platform verified at import is shown here):
    sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.txt
    d7dc32d60258618d97c724aaf786ad6016dec8915ea81d7f4df5b09d7af63932 bundle.json
  3. Verify the signature with minisign and the public key in “Signing key” below.

Signing key

Every reference release is signed with minisign. The platform verifies each signature, recomputes every number and only then publishes a release. You can check the same signature yourself.

Verify a release

Download bundle.json and bundle.json.minisig of a release into one folder and run:

minisign -Vm bundle.json -P RWS817nq2HJiNaDMNQ8bnVs6x/3ttSAe2JOI952ZNdR3gJhghjZoduf8

minisign prints “Signature and comment signature verified” and the trusted comment, which names the release tag.

To compare the checksums, run this in the same folder with SHA256SUMS.txt:

sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.txt
