Money Clock

Government debt, interest, money supply and central bank balance sheets of the euro area, Germany and the United States, next to Bitcoin's fixed issuance and the annual gold mine output. Every counter starts at an official figure and names its date and source.

How to read the counters.

Each counter starts at the last official value on its reference date and continues the latest trend from there. Everything after the reference date is an extrapolation by WhatTheChain, not an official figure. The figures change at most once per second. With reduced motion, or without JavaScript, they stay at the official value.

No data yet

The counter runs once the first official value is stored.

How the clock is calculated

  • Levels (debt, money supply, balance sheets): the counter starts at the last official value at the end of its period and moves by the change against the newest value at least twelve months older, divided by the seconds between them. A year is used because most of these series are not seasonally adjusted.
  • Amounts per period (interest, gold output): the latest period's amount divided by its seconds gives the amount per second. The counter shows the amount since 1 January at that rate.
  • Purchasing power: one minus the ratio of the 2002 average of the price index to its latest value, the same rule as the “Your birth year” calculator.
  • Bitcoin: the scheduled supply after the last block of the last recorded year, plus the current block subsidy every 10 minutes. The real spacing of blocks varies around that target.
  • A counter without an official value says “no data yet” and does not run. No figure is shown as 0 for lack of data.
