CBDC Watch

Where do central banks stand with digital currencies? For each country: the name, the status, whether the currency is meant for the public (retail) or for financial institutions (wholesale), and the properties the central bank has published. Every entry comes from the central bank's own publications and carries its date.

Tracker: no jurisdiction sourced yet

Only jurisdictions whose status is sourced from the central bank’s own publication are counted. The stages are the central banks’ own; the tracker shows properties, not a judgement.

How to read the table

  • Research: the central bank is analysing a digital currency. Development: it is designing or preparing one. Pilot: it is being tested with real users or institutions. Launched: it is issued. Cancelled or inactive: the work has been stopped or paused.
  • For a digital currency that has not been launched, the properties are the published design; they can change before any issuance.
  • The date is when the entry was last checked against its sources, or the date of the publication where only an older statement exists.
  • A property the central bank has not published reads “Not published”. It is never filled in from other sources.
  • Only the central banks' own publications are used. A country without such a source is not listed yet.
